Digg Overtakes Facebook, a Social Shift

After sitting through some genuinely interesting talks at Digital Day, I started thinking hard about the power of social media and specifically how useful it would be to have an Albanian-language social network in the style of Digg or Reddit, somewhere online for people to share their thoughts and the news they actually cared about. Digging around, I landed on a set of statistics from June 2007 worth sharing, because they show just how quickly and how much things can shift online.

According to Richard MacManus, writing on 20 June 2007: the latest numbers showed Digg had overtaken Facebook in unique visits, up 1400% in a single year. May 2007’s stats put Digg at 22.6 million unique visitors against Facebook’s 20.2 million.

A short while before that, about ten months earlier, Betaworks had announced on their blog that they’d bought Digg, reportedly at a laughably low $500,000. Facebook, meanwhile, is valued today at $63,000,000,000.

Worth remembering next time anyone tells you a platform’s current dominance is permanent.
