Content Marketing Is Just SEO That Finally Respects People

The phrase everyone is throwing around this year is content marketing. Every conference, every blog, every client meeting. Some people talk about it like it just got invented. I keep thinking, wait, is this not just the thing I have been trying to do the whole time.

Let me explain why I think it is not really new, and why I am still excited about it anyway.

The old game and the new game

Back when I started, SEO and good content felt like two separate jobs. There was the writing you did for people, and then there was the SEO stuff you did for the robot: the keywords, the links, the little tricks. Sometimes they even worked against each other. You would ruin a perfectly good sentence to stuff a phrase into it.

Then Panda and Penguin came along and started punishing the robot tricks. And suddenly the best way to rank was to make something a human genuinely wanted. The two jobs collapsed into one.

Content marketing is the name for that collapse. Write the genuinely useful thing, and the ranking follows, because Google now rewards roughly what people actually value.

Why this makes me happy

For once, the honest thing and the effective thing are the same move. I do not have to choose between serving the reader and serving the algorithm. I serve the reader, properly, and the algorithm mostly comes along for the ride. That is a world I want to work in.

It is also just more fun. Answering a real question well is a better way to spend a Tuesday than hunting for link loopholes that die in the next update.

What I am doing with it

I am pouring my energy into fewer, better pieces. Things that fully answer a question, that someone would actually bookmark or send to a friend. This is exactly what Qysh Me was always about, so it feels like the whole industry is finally arriving where we already were.

Call it content marketing, call it SEO, call it whatever sells the meeting. Under the buzzword it is simple: be genuinely useful, on purpose, over and over. I am all in on that.
