I Put My Own Face in Google Search Results and It Is Wild

This is one of those features that sounds small and feels huge once you see it working. Google has this thing called Authorship, where you link your content to your Google Plus profile, and then your little photo shows up right next to your articles in the search results.

I set it up this week. It took some fiddling with profile links and a bit of code on the site. And then I searched for one of my own posts, and there was my face, sitting in the results next to a page of plain blue links.

I stared at it for a while. It just looks different. More human. Like a person wrote this, not a faceless website.

Why I think this matters

A search results page is a wall of nearly identical blue links. Anything that makes yours stand out earns you clicks you were not getting before. A face does that. Your eye goes straight to it. Even if my page is not ranked first, the one with a photo pulls attention away from the ones without.

And there is a bigger idea underneath it. Google is basically saying it cares who wrote something, not just what site it is on. That real people, with reputations, standing behind their work, might start to matter for ranking. If that is where this goes, then building yourself up as a known name in your topic stops being vanity and starts being strategy.

What I am testing

I am watching whether my pages with the author photo pull a better click rate than the ones without, even at the same position. Early signs say yes, but I want more data before I say it for sure.

I have no idea how long Google keeps this feature around, because they change their minds constantly. But the underlying bet, that being a real named person who publishes good work is an advantage, feels like a safe one no matter what happens to the photo. So I am leaning into it.
