Google dropped another update this week. They are calling it Penguin, and where Panda went after thin content, this one is going after the sneaky link tricks. Over-optimized anchor text, spammy link networks, keyword stuffing that no human would ever write. All the stuff that used to work.
I watched a couple of sites in my circle lose most of their traffic overnight. Painful to see. But I would be lying if I said I was surprised.
Why I saw it coming
For years the loudest voices in SEO were basically teaching people how to trick a robot. Build a hundred links with the exact keyword as the anchor. Cram the phrase into the page six times. It felt fragile even while it worked, because you were building on sand. Google was always going to come fix it eventually.
Penguin is the fix.
What I am doing this week
I pulled up the projects I care about and went hunting for anything that looks manipulative:
- Pages where the same keyword is repeated so many times it reads like a broken record
- Links from junk sites we would never actually want to be associated with
- Anchor text that is too perfect, too optimized, too obviously built for Google and not for people
Where I find it, I am cleaning it up or walking it back. It is boring, unglamorous work.
The bigger shift in my head
I am done chasing tricks. Every time I learn a clever shortcut, an update comes along a year later and turns it into a liability. The stuff that never gets punished is the boring stuff: useful pages, real links from people who actually like your work, writing for humans first.
So that is the plan now. Build things good enough that the next Google update is something I read about with my coffee, not something I panic over.
