If you asked me what the actual product of Partia e Fortë was, I would not say the posters or the events or even the seat we eventually won. I would say the voice. Everything else was a delivery mechanism for a very particular way of talking.
The voice was this: unshakeable, cheerful confidence that Kosovo had already reached perfection, and mild confusion at anyone who wanted things to improve. Why would you want change? Everything is excellent. The roads, the institutions, the opportunities, all excellent. Vote to keep them exactly as they are.
Written down flat like that it does not sound like much. The craft was in never dropping it. Not for a tragedy, not for a scandal, not for a holiday. A single sincere post would have punctured the whole thing, and online you are constantly tempted to be sincere, because sincerity gets sympathy and sympathy feels like engagement.
I spent a lot of my time as the person guarding the voice. Not because I was funnier than the people around me, plenty were funnier, but because someone has to be the one who says “that line is good but it is not us.” A consistent voice is more valuable than an occasionally brilliant one. When people can predict the shape of your joke and still laugh, you have built something that travels on its own.
Some rules I worked to, on the writing side:
- The party is always right, the world is always wrong. Every post came from a place of total, untroubled certainty. The humor lived in the gap between that certainty and reality.
- Punch at power, never at the powerless. We mocked the people running things, the promises, the self-importance. Satire that mocks ordinary people is just bullying with better fonts.
- Short enough to screenshot. If a line could not survive being screenshotted with no context, it was too complicated. The best ones were quotable on their own.
- Let the reader finish the joke. We rarely spelled out the target. Kosovars knew exactly what we meant. Trusting the audience to get it is what made them feel like insiders, and insiders share.
The thing nobody tells you about a strong voice is that it becomes a filter for the whole operation. Once the voice existed, decisions got easier. Should we post about this? Only if the party has an opinion, and the party only has one opinion, that everything is perfect. Does this poster fit? Only if it is proud and absurd in equal measure.
I did not know what a brand voice was before this. I am learning it the hard way, by guarding this one every single day. A voice is not a tone document. It is a discipline. It is the thousand small refusals to say the easy sincere thing.
